THE SEVEN BEST COUNTRIES FOR BLACK WOMEN TRAVELERS
THE SEVEN BEST COUNTRIES FOR BLACK WOMEN TRAVELERS

Let’s be honest. No, let’s keep it real. There are some places that are more high risk than others for Black American. But since we’re keeping it all the way one hundred, most travel guides don’t always consider race as a determining factor for a potential destination. While mainstream travel guides often overlook racial dynamics as a determining factor for destination selection, we recognize the importance of these considerations—particularly for women traveling solo or in small groups. We’ve even included some places that may have been kept off your radar.
Our comprehensive analysis evaluates destinations based on cultural diversity, hospitality, less racial profiling, tourism infrastructure, and places where Black communities are visible and established. These recommendations come from experienced Black female travelers, travel writers, and influencers who have extensively documented their experiences across these destinations.
1. Ghana
Not that you havn't heard but Ghana ranks as one of the safest destinations for Black women travelers, with Accra serving as a particularly welcoming hub. The country has actively embraced people of African descent through initiatives such as the "Year of Return," streamlining visa applications and citizenship processes. Travelers can expect minimal concerns regarding racial profiling, and single travelers will find numerous opportunities for social connections. Christian visitors will appreciate the variety of welcoming church services offered throughout the week.
Travel Note: Negotiate prices for local items such as clothing and jewelry, as vendors may adjust pricing based on perceived income levels.
2. Portugal
Traveling to a Europena destination can be hit or miss for many, not just Black women. However, Portugal emerges as a highly recommended destination for Black women, particularly in Lisbon, Porto, and Faro, due to its remarkable diversity and substantial African communities. Black travelers consistently report experiencing a strong sense of community and belonging, with Porto receiving particular praise for its inclusive atmosphere.
Travel Note: While rare, some travelers have reported occasional inconsistent service in restaurants, though this remains an isolated occurrence.
3. Canada (Montreal)
Montreal boasts a vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture and holds the distinction of having the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada. The city provides a welcoming environment with less congestion than Toronto while maintaining rich cultural diversity. Black women frequently report feeling integrated within the Afro-Caribbean community of Little Burgundy—a historic neighborhood in Montreal's southwest borough that serves as the traditional home of the city's Black English-speaking, working-class community. Located between Saint-Henri and Pointe-Saint-Charles, this area is often referred to as the "Harlem of the North."
Travel Note: Summer visits are recommended due to harsh winter conditions. Basic French language skills will enhance the travel experience.
4. Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)
Brazil hosts one of the world's largest Black populations outside of Africa, with a significant Nigerian diaspora. The country offers a rich fusion of African and Portuguese cultures, while Rio de Janeiro features a dynamic and accessible arts scene. Brazil has maintained its popularity as a destination for single Black women for many years.
Travel Note: Peak season travel during February and March commands premium pricing. Early booking is essential as accommodations fill quickly during these periods.
5. The Gambia (Serekunda)
This West African nation may not appear on conventional travel lists, but it offers an exceptional experience for travelers seeking a peaceful beach vacation with minimal complications. Despite its small size and limited tourist infrastructure, The Gambia provides outstanding cuisine, local shopping, and rich cultural experiences. This relatively undiscovered destination features uncrowded beaches, nearby safari opportunities, and UNESCO World Heritage sites. The country has quietly attracted single women travelers for years.
Travel Note: Year-end peak seasons command higher prices, and accessibility may be challenging depending on departure location.
6. Costa Rica
Costa Rica stands out as a sought-after destination where Black women report feeling completely secure throughout their travels. Visitors consistently describe feeling safe and welcomed while enjoying the country's natural beauty and adventure opportunities. The nation offers excellent outdoor activities, stunning landscapes, and genuinely friendly locals.
Travel Note: Nightlife quality has been a concern for some travelers, as many venues may not feature preferred music genres, though entertainment options do exist.
7. Indonesia (Bali)
Bali represents an ideal "Eat, Pray, Love" destination, consistently ranking among the top locations where Black women travelers report feeling safe with minimal issues. This predominantly Islamic region offers extensive sightseeing opportunities, tropical beverages, and stunning natural environments.
Travel Note: Consider significant time zone differences when traveling from the United States. Local regulations regarding unmarried couples may affect accommodation options—verify hotel policies before booking.
